Zero Discrimination Day is Celebrated Today
On March 1, people around the world are celebrating Zero Discrimination Day. The Day was initiated by UNAIDS in order to celebrate equality, regardless of one’s gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion. This year’s theme is Stand Out and encourages everyone to stand for fair and just societies.

ECOM believes it is crucial to emphasize the widespread problems of discrimination and stigma towards key populations, most vulnerable to HIV infection, including people living with HIV, gay men, other men who have sex with men, and transgender people, in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

“By Stand Out, we also mean the opportunity to live a life openly and not be afraid of persecution or disrespectful treatment due to a person’s HIV status and/or sexual orientation. Unfortunately, due to the prejudices and discriminatory legal practices present in many EECA countries’, people have to hide their status and orientation, which negatively affects their health and well-being,” stated ECOM’s Executive Director, Vitaly Djuma.

ECOM encourages everybody to respect other people, regardless of their diffirences. Only approaches based on equality and human rights can be effective in fighting HIV/AIDS epidemics.

Zero Discrimination Day was initiated by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), which leads and inspires the world to achieve its shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.
