We congratulate ECOM Human Rights and Legal Issues Officer, Yuri Yoursky, who has been elected as a new member of ILGA-Europe Executive Board for the period of 2020-2022.
ILGA-Europe’s General Assembly 2020 took place online on 24-25 November under the theme “Protect, Adapt and Rally”. Due to COVID-19 it was the first time this annual event took place online. The Annual Conference is the single biggest event in ILGA-Europe’s calendar and Europe’s largest annual LGBTI conference. The conference is assembled by focusing on ILGA-Europe’s Strategic Plan, which provides direction for the annual work plans and funding proposals of the organisation. Every year the membership elects five new members to its executive board, where Yuri was just elected. Together with him the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia now will be presented by Anastasia Danilova from GENDERDOC-M (Moldova) and Svetlana Zakharova from Russian LGBT Network (Russia).
“I want to acquire this post to introduce positive changes in the lives of those that dwell in Eastern Europe and Central Asia countries where being LGBTQI is not yet a norm and where it can be punished by law. Helping to creating enabling legal environment is the first step of improving lives of LBGTQI, and for that international pressure is a must. That’s what my advocacy work is about, and that’s why I wish to engage more with ILGA-Europe’s Central Asian division in developing their strategies end enhancing advocacy work related to the region, helping specifically for countries which are under-covered by the global programs.” – said Yuri in his application.
We wish Yuri a fruitful work and looking forward to strengthen ECOM engagement in Eurasian LGBTQI movement.
