This year, ECOM published the Regional Report on Violations of the Rights to Health of Gay Men, Other MSM and Trans People in the CEECA Region in 2017, which was developed based on the national reports of ECOM partners in countries of the region.
The document describes trends in the region regarding human rights abuses that LGBT people face when accessing health services. The report also contains information about documented cases of rights violations and a short analysis of the legal environment.
The national reports address particularities regarding the observance of the right to health in national contexts in more detail, and also describe the situation regarding discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity, the adoption of discriminatory legislative acts, and the complete or partial lack of health services.
Although each country has national, cultural, social, and economic particularities, a number of general trends are observed:
- high level of stigma and discrimination;
- poor quality of medical services, or refusal to provide such services;
- lack of antidiscrimination legislation;
- lack of or insufficient professional development of medical workers for working with gay and other MSM and trans people.
Organizations representing the interests of the LGBT community participated in collecting information. As a rule, these included initiative groups, LGBT organizations and/or activists that collect information about human rights violations.
