On the occasion of the International Day against Homo-, Bi- and Transphobia, we launched a call for applications from ECOM partners and members to conduct information and media campaigns.
Each of the successfully implemented projects changed the world around, making society less homophobic and LGBT people more open.
We are ready to share the results of long work.
National trans coalition human rights NGO
The National Trans* Coalition did a great job with bloggers. First of all, they conducted a training session for 10 bloggers to tell more about issues related to trans* people. Thus, the organization acquired friendly bloggers who can spread correct information.
QUEER media
This online media continued to work on LGBT content as part of our media campaign. During our cooperation, 5 interviews and 3 materials were released.
The material "The 20th century is the most homophobic century" tells the story of the depathologisation of homosexuality and was timed to May 17, and the article "05/17/1990" tells the story of this important day.
Other interesting interviews were published on Parni.Plus:
- Interview with a homophobe — Timur Bulatov
We recommend that only people with nerves of steel watch this, because the flow of homophobia is heavy there.
- Interview with a deputy — Sergey Troshin, the first acting deputy in Russia to come out as gay
"DiverCity" Social-Cultural, Human Rights Defender NGO
Over the summer, DiverCity recorded the #5PrideStories podcast series with five members of the LGBT community.
Personal stories and experiences that you can hear voiced by heroes themselves are a great way to change the perception of LGBT people.
New Generation Humanitarian NGO (NGNGO)
New Generation started this parade of queer activities first with a massive May 17th event.
More than 70 people took part in the IDAHOBIT-2022 event.
At the initiative of New Generation, this year 5 public and human rights organizations joined forces to provide a platform for the LGBT community and tell about their activities and difficulties, which they face in the work process, to various interested bodies — representatives of diplomatic missions and government bodies, local and international institutions. And also in order to discuss together possible ways to solve them.
We are glad that we were part of such a large-scale event in Armenia.
Charitable organization 100 Percent Life. Kyiv Region
Our partners 100% Life focused on Ukrainian journalists. As part of the campaign, they created an infographic about the mechanism of the discrimination effect on a person “persecuted” by ill-wishers, as well as about tools to overcome stigma and discrimination as the main barriers to the development of an open tolerant society.
The infographic was sent to representatives of regional and national media to use in further materials about members of the LGBT community.
Also, 6 posters were developed: about the number of suicides among LGBT teenagers, about heroic deeds of men who were despised because of their homosexuality, but gained respect after people learned about their heroism.
Republican public association People PLUS
People PLUS also focused on media representatives in their work.
The organization held the webinar "Hate speech. How not to write about the LGBTQ+ community in the media". Thus, a pool of friendly journalists, who can become real allies in the fight for equality, was created.
After the webinar, a competition for the best works on LGBT was announced.
But not only journalists need to know how to work with LGBT topics. Activists also need skills on how to work with the media. Therefore, People PLUS held the training "How to work with the media correctly". At the training, community representatives learned the intricacies of communicating with journalists and methods of getting information across.
Results of the event: The participants learned different forms of communication with the media, methods of getting information across. They learned how not to get into difficult situations related to the disclosure of sexual orientation, personal information, if this was not planned in advance by the respondent. They took part in a master class in photography and learned how to choose the best angles. This skill will help the participants look good during video interviews in the future.
Public association Kyrgyz Indigo
Kyrgyz Indigo implemented the Queer MediaBox project. During the project, videos were created and then distributed on social networks to create a positive image of the LGBT community.
To implement the media campaign, a blogger was involved — Zee Marat, with more than 140 thousand followers on TikTok and more than 16 thousand followers on Instagram under the nickname @ohmybabyzee.
The videos were released in the format of interview discussions — the participants talked with the presenter-creator Zee, telling stories from their life: how they understood and accepted themselves, their SOGI, what difficulties they faced in society on the grounds of SOGI and how they dealt with such situations.
1st guest Artur
2nd guest Kanykey
3rd guest Hoshi
4th guest Lilit
5th guest Maya
In total, all 5 videos got 230 thousand views on TikTok.
Such projects and campaigns change public opinion about LGBT people, and this is an important step in human rights advocacy throughout the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
