The war in Ukraine, whose active phase started on February 24, continues to this day. People are dying, the economy is in crisis, and LGBT activists are trying to do everything in their power. Therefore, we continue to support ECOM members and partners from Ukraine, as well as all members of the community and Ukrainians who need it.
What we have managed to do in 10 months of the full-scale war:
- We have conducted a needs assessment of ECOM members from Ukraine, processed 21 requests from them and have been able to support requests for humanitarian aid and funds for urgent relocation within the country;
- Conducted a medium- and long-term needs assessment among ECOM members and partners from Ukraine. The results will be used for advocacy among donors;
- We continue the process of a medium- and long-term needs assessment among trans* people in Ukraine;
- Supported two requests to organize temporary shelters for gays and trans* people in Ukraine;
- Provided funding to Gender Zed and Gender Stream organizations providing urgent assistance for LGBT Ukrainians:
Gender Zed has been able to fulfill the requests of 600 LGBT people in need of humanitarian assistance from Southern and Eastern Ukraine. The colleagues have also been able to secure the conditions for safe and uninterrupted work thanks to this support from ECOM.
Gender Stream has been able to set up a shelter and provide temporary shelter for 36 LGBT people, developed instructions on how to cross the border for trans* people and provided 250 people with various informational consultations on evacuation, obtaining an F64.0 certificate, and also provided 200 people with financial assistance, helped 20 trans* people with hormonal medications.
- Provided assistance to organizations GenderDoc-M in Moldova and Hatter in Hungary, which help LGBT refugees arriving in their countries with temporary asylum or adaptation in the country;
83 LGBT persons have received support in Moldova from the organization GenderDoc-M regarding access to HIV services, migration and temporary asylum in the country. The work continues.
The Hatter organization has been able to provide information and psychological support for LGBT refugees in Hungary through a hotline.
- Assisted the work of the organizations Insight and Cohort, which provide individual assistance for trans* people in Ukraine.
Insight has focused on rapid response and support for trans* people in Ukraine. The organization has been able to help with the following:
▪ 102 people have received hormone therapy;
▪ 235 people have received general medical supplies;
▪ 186 people — direct humanitarian assistance to trans* people to cover their living expenses;
▪ 105 trans* people have received financial support to relocate within the country;
▪ 156 people have received help with temporary shelter;
▪ 47 trans* people have received psychological and legal support.
Cohort has also focused on direct humanitarian support for trans* people in Ukraine. The organization has been able to help 160 people, including direct humanitarian assistance and payment for medical services:
▪ 39 people have received assistance in receiving hormone replacement therapy;
▪ 36 people have received assistance with purchase of medicines;
▪ 22 people have been able to use the services of specialist doctors and get the necessary medical tests.
▪ Upon request, direct humanitarian assistance has been provided to 30 trans* people.
▪ 33 people have received financial support for trans* people who relocate within Ukraine.
- The whole year we have been providing individual humanitarian assistance for all members of the LGBT community from Ukraine. To date, 1,310 requests for humanitarian assistance have been processed, 584 of which have been supported for a total amount of UAH 1,586,101.85.
503 (86%) of these requests were for covering food expenses, 349 (60%) for hygiene products, 305 (52%) for medicine or health services, 234 (40%) for clothing and 223 (38%) for temporary housing. 86% of the requests included several items at once.

- We have also provided information assistance to 176 people, by giving them information about possible shelters for LGBT people, both domestically and abroad.
- Supported the work connected to providing direct psychological assistance on the basis of existing shelters and organizations working with LGBT people in Ukraine. One can apply for individual psychological counseling or take part in group therapy in Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih and Mykolaiv. In total, 155 psychological consultations have been provided and 65 mutual assistance groups held.
- Our chatbot continues working. It provides psychological and informational support for LGBT people from Ukraine, as well as peer-to-peer counseling and consultations with a doctor and a lawyer. Over this time, 2,474 consultations have been provided through this bot: 781 informational consultations, 658 consultations with a psychologist, 679 peer-to-peer consultations, 246 consultations with a doctor and 110 consultations with a lawyer.
