Trans People Working Group

Every year, dozens of attacks on trans people are recorded in the countries across the region, with trans sex workers being particularly vulnerable. Many cases remain uninvestigated due to transphobia within law enforcement agencies.

In response to these challenges, with the support of ECOM, the Trans People Working Group on HIV and Sexual Health in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (TPWG) was established in May 2019. This is the only regional group whose members and experts are exclusively trans people.

The group’s mission is to improve the quality of life for trans people by increasing visibility, addressing the needs of trans people in the context of HIV prevention and trans health in general, conveying the community’s vision to medical professionals and government institutions and ensuring access to trans competent and trans sensitive public health services.

The group identifies its key areas of activity as depathologizing transgenderness, conducting research to build a package of services for trans people in the countries and developing advocacy documents to protect the rights of transgender people.
